My Interview (via Internet) with AIRBORN creater CARTER, a 19 year-old teen from Atlanta..
And I tell you, it was a pleasure --

Our Discussion :

EXPOSÉ: What made you want to start your own clothing line ?
CARTER: I'm an artist and graphic designer by trade, so I'm constantly coming up with these crazy design ideas and pieces. and I was just like how cool would it be to make clothing my canvas to showcase my work and be able to really like reach out and touch people with my art. So I just felt like I could offer something to the fashion world, that was innovatively distinct and creatively original.

É: did you get the idea to start the line?
C: I originally got the idea like 5 years ago, but I sort've gave up on it, which was a biggggg mistake. Never give up on a dream. EVER. But 2nd semester of my senior year of high school sitting in math class. I was sketching on my notes instead of paying attention, haha and my bestfriend, Jakia Thompson was sitting next to me, and she was like "you should so design your own clothes." and that re-sparked it all.

É: What's your vision for AIRBORN?
C: My vision for Airborn is to develop it into a versatile, distinct brand when contrasted against others. A brand that projects messages, lifestyles, and cultures of all kinds instead of just being another clothing line. A brand thats able to create and produce really creative and high quality seasons consistently. I don't want people to just wear our clothes, I want them to live through them.

É: How long have you been at this?
C: I've been making art since I was about 6 years old, but I didn't start laying down sketches and design for clothes and stuff until I was about 13. So about 6 years now.

É: What inspired you to do this?
C: My main inspiration would be my grandmother, Darlene Rountree, who passed away a few years back. She was always pushing me to chase my dreams and never give up. My other huge inspirations would be Pharrell and Nigo of BBC. Ben and Bobby Hundreds of the Hundreds. McFly of Popular Phasion. His artwork is sick. Johnny Cupcakes. His concepts and the detail he pays to all the small things, like labeling and packaging. Pucci. Dior. both of them have very interesting stories on how they became who they are. and the list goes on. I'm really inspired by innovative, unique, and creative designing. Designers who bring something new to the table each and every season, consistently.

É: Did you create the line alone?
C: Originally, yes, I created the line by myself last summer. But ran into alot of obstacles and things, so I figured I couldn't play Superman with this haha, so I brought on my bestfriend, Jamiah Aguabella to help pilot this aircraft. I also have my other bestfriend, Jakia Thompson on staff, helping us out on the sorta business side of everything.

É: How's your feedback?
C: Quitely honestly, I don't think there's any words to describe the amazing support we've been getting from not only our peers, but our community, our families, and people just all across the country.

É: Who's your fav. designers of this season?
C: Other than us here at Airborn, haha you know I had to do it.But in all seriousness, I'm really feeling all of Johnny Cupcakes new stuff, and Play Cloths is definitely coming out with dope gear this season. 10 DEEP is doing it big also.

É: Why the name AIRBORN?
C: I chose Airborn because I had a childhood dream to become a fighter pilot for the US Air Force, I grew up in a military family, so my fascination with flying and airplanes has literally been around my whole life. Jamiah, my bestfriend and co-owner, he also aspired to be a pilot growing up. So it was just fitting that two fly individuals who longed to fly name our line Airborn. I mean it's just that. Elevated high above the stereotypes and generalities of today's society. We are Airborn.
